Parsons Newman Lecture: “Monocacy’s Lost Battalions” with NPS Ranger Matthew Borders

As fighting raged around Monocacy Junction on July 9, 1864, Major General Lew Wallace and Brigadier General James Ricketts desperately looked east for the rest of Ricketts command who were to be arriving by train. That help never came. Why were nearly 1000 men delayed in reaching the battlefield? Find out who these soldiers were, what happened to them and where they were found with Ranger Matt Borders as he discusses, “Monocacy’s Lost Battalions” at Heritage Frederick at 6pm on July 25.
Matt Borders holds a BA in United States history from Michigan State University, as well as a MS in Historic Preservation, with a focus in Battlefield Interpretation from Eastern Michigan University. He has been a seasonal ranger at Antietam National Battlefield, the historian for the American Battlefield Protection Program, a certified battlefield guide at Antietam National Battlefield and Harpers Ferry National Historic Site, as well as the president of the Frederick County Civil War Round Table. Matt is currently a ranger at Monocacy National Battlefield.

In our first Patio Music night of the year, we are pleased to present local talent Freddie Long! The singer/songwriter that calls Frederick County, MD home has garnered numerous music awards, opened for many major national acts, had music licensed and aired internationally, and secured corporate promotional partnerships, all in addition to recording three full albums of original material and playing thousands of shows up and down the eastern half of the US.

With beautiful paintings of the County’s landmarks and natural splendor, our story explores the ways in which the visual arts provided economic opportunity to individuals and communities. Current offerings in the Digital History Library include books exploring the revitalization of Downtown Frederick, a survey of eighteenth and nineteenth century houses around Frederick County, and a biography of Charles V. Main, former Chief of the Frederick City Police Department, among others.
