During the American Civil War, access to drugs and medicines became a serious issue for communities on both sides of the conflict. Instead of relying on official sources, civilians often relied on what they could scrounge or grow themselves. Greg Susla, NMCWM volunteer will discuss his three years of work on the re-established and medicinal herb garden at the Pry House, Antietam National Battlefield. He will note the medicinal applications of the various plants grown in the garden and their uses during the 19th century. Greg Susla received his pharmacy degrees from the Universities of Connecticut and Florida and completed a critical care pharmacy residency at the Ohio State University Hospitals. CSI: The Historical Edition

Admission: $10 per person/ $8 Heritage Frederick Members

Investigate the past with Heritage Frederick and historian Mike Dixon on June 8 at 2pm as we catch some of history’s elusive criminals. Programs such as Law and Order and CSI have acquainted most people with the modern techniques for solving crimes. But for most of our past, sleuths did as much as they could to investigate crimes, but they lacked the most basic of tools. There was not much the sheriff, part-time constable, justice of the peace, and coroner could do, except rely on obvious physical evidence and witnesses. However, as the scientific age arrived, great advances in police science allowed detectives to crack complex cases. Drawing on notorious crimes and real mysteries from yesteryear, this one-hour program shows how science, technology, and professional police practices helped detectives catch and convict criminals and close once unsolvable cases. Mike Dixon is an award winning historian and author, appearing on the Today Show, Maryland Public Television, the National Geographic Channel and National Public Radio.
