Volunteers Are Invaluable at Heritage Frederick

We have a variety of opportunities for people 18 years of age and up who desire to make a difference in their community by inspiring a love of history.

Volunteers need only to be enthusiastic to learn the history and heritage of Frederick County and willing to share their knowledge with the public.

Heritage Frederick provides training for all volunteer opportunities.

Visitor Services

Heritage Frederick relies on museum volunteers to represent our organization to the public and engage visitors in our exhibits and programs. Visitor Services volunteers help at the front desk, collecting admissions and visitor statistics, guiding visitors to our exhibits, and assisting with museum shop sales.

More Volunteer Opportunities

Walking Tour Guide

Heritage Frederick offers a range of walking tours through Downtown Frederick every Saturday from April through November. Guides are provided with detailed tour scripts and have the opportunity to shadow tours before leading one on your own. We currently offer three tours: Foundations of Frederick History, Frederick in the Civil War, and Art and Architecture.

Museum Docent

Museum Docents are trained to give guided tours for all ages.

At the Museum of Frederick County History tours include both permanent and changing exhibitions covering the county’s past from early settlement through the Cold War.

Training will start in January for the “Stitches Through Time – Women’s Work From Farm to Fashion” exhibit that will open March 1, 2023.

Research Center Assistant

Assist the public with historical and genealogical research, using the many historical resources found in the Frederick County Archives and Research Center.

Other opportunities include doing research for upcoming projects, maintaining the genealogy and history vertical files, as well as helping other volunteers and staff with projects.

People with prior experience with genealogical research may work on fulfilling online and mail research requests.

Shifts: Monday – Friday by appointment

Heritage Garden Volunteer

Perform light gardening work (weeding, pruning, sweeping walk ways, raking leaves, basic care of plants) in the Heritage Frederick’s beautiful Heritage Garden.
