Discover the rich history of Frederick County through a series of activities and hands-on object opportunities. Students will be an investigative reporter, discovering the story of a past resident of Frederick County. Students will explore the lives of these residents from early settlement to the Civil War, utilizing historic objects and primary resource documents.
Length: 40 or 60 minutes | Grade: 3rd-5th
Why are cultural traditions important and how do they past along to the next generation? Explore the rich history of the Piscataway people living in the Frederick County area from the Pre-European contact to the present. Students will examine lifeways, trade and oral traditions in conjunction with hands-on artifacts and discover why the Piscataway call themselves Peyakohewamak (One Family).

According to the diarist Jacob Engelbrecht, there were 532 slaves living in the city of Frederick in 1830. This does not include the many more slaves residing elsewhere in Frederick County. How did these slaves live? What kind of work did they do? How did they eventually attain freedom? In this program, students learn about the lives and experiences of Frederick County slaves.
