Monocacy National Battlefield

On July 9, 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early and his army of 15,000 men encountered a Union force of only 5,800 under the command of General Lew Wallace at Monocacy Junction near Frederick, Maryland. Early’s goal was to threaten, and perhaps capture, the United States capital to divert Union forces away from the Confederate army at Petersburg. A successful raid would also threaten the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln, whose public support was declining.

South Mountain Battlefield

The Battle of South Mountain, fought on September 14, 1862, is the site where Gen. Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the North was stopped. It was also the first battle of the war fought in Maryland. A seventeen-stop driving tour leads visitors through the battle that was a prelude to Antietam. The free driving tour brochure, “Battle of South Mountain, ” is available from the park address or at Gathland State Park. Also request a brochure of other Washington County Civil War sites called, “Maryland Civil War Crossroads.” Gathland State Park has a museum with Civil War exhibits.

Antietam National Battlefield

23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

Tenth Ward Distilling Company

The name “Tenth Ward” is a reference to the way Frederick City was divisioned during the late 19th century. Our location at 508 East Church Street was part of what used to be the Tenth Ward of Frederick City.

For the history buffs and lovers of everything Frederick out there, you might find it interesting to know that the city of Frederick intentionally built this sector on the east side of town to be the primary location for industry. The reason for this is that the wind in Frederick tends to blow east and our thoughtful city founders figured they could spare their growing town from those offensive industrial smells.

Tenth Ward Distilling Company is a woman owned micro-distillery, locally owned by Monica Pearce (the boss lady) and is located in downtown Frederick, Maryland.

Brewer’s Alley

Brewer’s Alley’s location at 124 North Market Street is steeped in Frederick history. The first residents of Frederick held a lottery to raise money to build a town hall and market house on this location in 1765, which was completed in 1769. This structure served its purpose for over 100 years and was witness to the birth of Frederick as a city. The Market House spanned the Civil War, including the ransoming of the city by Confederate General Jubal Early.
